A lot of people might have seen vacuum excavation being done, by one of the vacuum truck service companies, but may not know a lot about what it is and how it works. Basically, excavating using vacuum, otherwise called soft-dig, is a non-mechanical method of digging. It works by directing a flow of air or water down a digging site in order to loosen up any material, and to break up large particles.
After the soil has been properly loosened, the actual vacuum excavation part begins. All the material that is loose is sucked into a big container, using a nozzle that creates a vacuum. Think of it as a vacuum cleaner picking up all the dirt in your home, but instead of moving it along your carpet, you just point it down a hole.
Vacuum excavation is very useful, especially in crowded, urban areas. That’s because it requires less people to do the job, and it takes up less space. This is great when working on busy streets or in areas that have heavy foot traffic. Also, it is far less messy than traditional digging. The material dug up is safely stored inside a container, therefore there is no risk of it being spread around and making a mess.
